Can you take HTP 5 and melatonin together?
There are no experiments to prove that the two ingredients interfere with each other or produce any harmful health effects, but taking them together may cause excessive intake, so it is better to take them with caution and ask your doctor if necessary.
Melatonin is an indole hormone produced by the pineal gland in humans and a variety of animals.
Melatonin was first isolated from the bovine pineal gland in 1959 by Lerner et al.
Pentahydroxytryptophan is the precursor substance of melatonin, which is produced in vivo by the following process: firstly, tryptophan is hydroxylated to produce 5-HTP, then decarboxylated to 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), then acetylated to N-acetyl-5-hydroxytryptamine, and finally methylated to produce N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine, which is also known as melatonin.
Oral 5-HTP is a more direct way to improve 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HT). In the brain's pineal gland cells, tryptophan catalyzes the production of melatonin, which affects sleep. 5-HT increases rapid eye movement sleep (usually by about 25%) and prolongs stages 3 and 4 of deep sleep without prolonging total sleep time. The sleep stages that decrease in time are non-REM stages I and II (these are the less important sleep stages).
The secretion of melatonin has a circadian rhythm. After nightfall, light stimulation is diminished, the enzymatic activity of the pineal gland for melatonin synthesis is enhanced, and the level of melatonin secretion in the body increases accordingly, reaching a peak at 2~3 am. The level of melatonin at night directly affects the quality of sleep. With age, the pineal gland atrophy until calcification, resulting in the rhythm of the biological clock is weakened or disappeared, especially after the age of 35, the body's own secretion of melatonin significantly decreased, an average of 10-15% every 10 years, resulting in sleep disorders and a series of dysfunctions, and melatonin levels decreased, sleep reduction is one of the important signs of human brain aging. Therefore, supplementing melatonin from outside the body can maintain the melatonin level in the body in a youthful state, adjust and restore the circadian rhythm, not only deepen sleep and improve sleep quality, but more importantly, improve the functional state of the whole body, improve the quality of life and slow down the aging process. Melatonin is a hormone that induces natural sleep in the body, which overcomes sleep disorders and improves sleep quality by regulating the natural sleep of people. The major difference between it and other sleeping pills is that melatonin is non-addictive and has no significant side effects. At night before bedtime, take 1~2 tablets (containing about 1.5~3mg of melatonin) orally, generally within 20~30 minutes to produce sleepiness, and in the morning after dawn melatonin automatically loses its effectiveness, and after waking up, there is no feeling of tiredness and sleepiness to wake up.
