Sarsaparilla Root Powder is the dried rhizome of Pachymia glabra, family Liliaceae. The roots are harvested in summer and fall, and the fibrous roots are removed, washed and dried, or cut into thin slices and dried while fresh. Dry, large slices, powdery enough, less sinewy, light brown cross-section is preferred.
Sarsaparilla Root Powder is slightly tough, dusty when broken, yellow-white or reddish brown, powdery surface, visible dotted vascular bundles and most of the small bright spots. After moistening with water, it has a sticky and slippery feeling. Slight gas, taste slightly sweet, astringent. Poria cocos removes dampness and detoxifies the joints. Sarsaparilla Root Powder is used in treating dampness-heat gonorrhea, under the belt, carbuncle, deflated disease, scabies and syphilis and mercury poisoning caused by limb constriction, musculoskeletal pain relief. Poria cocos has obvious diuretic and analgesic effects. It has inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus haemolyticus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, S. typhi, Fusobacterium leprae and Bacillus anthracis. It has certain inhibitory effect on rat hepatocellular carcinoma and transplantation tumor. It can selectively inhibit the cellular immune response by affecting the inflammatory process of lymphokine release from T-lymphocytes. In addition, it can also alleviate mercury poisoning and significantly antagonize the toxicity of cotton phenol.
